Rolex Middle Sea Race & Sailing Hounds Experience

The Rolex Middle Sea Race is a 606-mile offshore classic that challenges crews with some of the Mediterranean’s most complex sailing conditions. Starting in Valletta’s Grand Harbour, the fleet heads north toward the Strait of Messina, where strong currents and shifting winds demand precise timing and navigation.

Rounding Stromboli, crews often face unstable breeze and tactical sail changes before driving into the stronger winds and swell along Sicily’s western coast. The southern leg past Pantelleria and Lampedusa can bring anything from light-air traps to fast downwind runs, making routing decisions critical.

The final approach back to Malta is rarely predictable, with coastal effects creating last-minute opportunities and risks. Finishing beneath Valletta’s fortress walls marks the end of a race known for its technical challenges, dramatic scenery, and relentless demand for seamanship.
